There are many differents Rating systems in the tennis world, the main target is not really to get a rank (1, 2, 3, 4 .....) like for ATP or WTA players but to get a rating by level . This level scale can be then, used to organize event (without seeing a beginer against a top player) and to give players a target. It also allows to rate a very large number of players and give them an idea about their real tennis level . Most of the rating systems have between 10 to 25 "drawer", the most you have , the most accurate they are...Some like the French have complex history and may seem strange...(explanation below)
Most of the time the difference between players of different country is due to the organization of the sport... The lack of asian and african players in the professional tennis circuit is directly the consequences of the lack of infrastructure, organization and involvment of their government and the local tennis federations...
Why the local rating is so important ? It's the steps who allow a young player to grow up, giving him real idea about his improvment and target... It's also the fundamental component to any local competition ....

Rating History
At the begining to allow players of different level to play together an Handicap was given to the strongest player . the base of this handicap was called "0". (they chose a very good tennis player and gave him this rating, all the players of a similar level were also "0" )
Then in a match with a player with a "0" rating :
• the player with the "15/1" was starting with 2 extra points during 1 game then 1 extra point during the 5 other games : 30/0 on the first game then 15/0 every 6 games
• the player with the "15/2" was starting with 2 extra points during 2 game then 1 extra point during the 4 other games : 30/0 on the 2 first games then 15/0 every 6 games (etc...15/3 , 15/4, 15/5)
For "négatifs" (-2/6, -4/6, - 15, -30) players, the same idea was used but in a reverse way, it was the "0" rating player who had extra points
Example :
• against a "-2/6" player the "0" was starting with 1 extra point, 2 times every 6 gamesFrench tennis stat 2009
